What makes the dirt nerds different from other landscapers?
At The Dirt Nerds, we bring over 100 years of combined experience to every project, led by an industry expert with 40 years in landscaping. We pride ourselves on complete transparency—no gimmicks, no overpromises. We don’t just tell people what they want to hear; we listen carefully to what they want and use our knowledge to put the right plant in the right spot. There’s a method to the madness—every choice is deliberate, backed by experience and licensed expertise in landscaping, irrigation, and pesticide application. When you work with us, you get honest advice, high-quality craftsmanship, and landscapes designed to last.
How do you pick which plants to use?
Choosing the right plants isn’t just about what looks good—it’s about what will thrive in your specific space. We consider sunlight, soil type, drainage, climate, and maintenance needs. We also listen closely to what you want and combine that with our expertise to place the right plant in the right spot. There’s a method to the madness: every selection is deliberate, ensuring your landscape looks beautiful and lasts for years to come.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. The Dirt Nerds is fully licensed in landscaping, irrigation, and pesticide application. Licensing isn’t just a formality—it’s there for your protection as the consumer, ensuring that all work meets professional, regulated standards. We’re also insured, so your property is protected while we work.
Do you provide estimates before starting?
Yes! We start with a free estimate to give you a general idea of your project. After that, the process moves into a consultation phase, where we spend time discussing your ideas, exploring options, and refining the plan. This consultation is a paid service, as it involves dedicated time and expertise to shape your project. Once everything is clearly defined, we provide a detailed proposal so you know exactly what to expect.
How far in advance should I schedule my project?
The timing depends on a few factors—the size of your project and what needs to be done. Typically, projects are scheduled anywhere from a week to three months in advance. We actually see a busy schedule as a good sign—it means our work is in demand! Think of it like a popular restaurant: if it’s good, there will be a wait, and we appreciate your patience as we make sure every project gets the attention and care it deserves.
Can you work with my existing plants and features?
Absolutely! The ability to transplant existing plants depends largely on the time of year, as proper timing ensures the best chance of survival and healthy growth. Sometimes, however, transplanting may not be in the best interest of the plant or your landscape, and if that’s the case, we’ll communicate our recommendations clearly. This approach is a key part of our proactive landscape management, helping protect your existing investment while creating a space that thrives for years to come.
What is the difference between mulch and pinestraw?
Both protect soil and plants, but mulch offers a longer-lasting finish while pine straw provides a softer, more natural look. We can help you decide which is best for your yard.
Do i need to blow out my irrigation lines in the winter?
No need to worry—our frost line is only about an inch deep. As long as the water has been properly shut off and the system fully drained, there won’t be any issues. This means your irrigation system will remain safe and intact throughout the colder months, and you won’t have to worry about damage from freezing.
